Transportation Choices Statement on I-947
Last year, Transportation Choices Coalition led the winning Sound Transit 3 campaign to expand the Sound Transit light rail, commuter rail, and regional express system. This measure was strongly approved by 54% of the region after several years of extensive public engagement, the legislature voting to authorize a public vote, and nearly a half century of punting the decision to expand high-capacity transit for future generations.
Voters approved the measure because they wanted a reliable option to get out traffic. Our region is experiencing record levels of growth with nearly a million more people anticipated in the next several decades. The voter-approved Sound Transit 3 plan will complete a 116-mile light rail system, expand commuter rail and bus rapid transit -- giving residents a fast and reliable option to get where they need to go. Sound Transit ridership last month exceeded 2 million riders. With this record ridership, residents of the Puget Sound region are showing their support for mass transit every day, just by getting on a bus or train.
Initiative 947 is yet another Tim Eyman effort to keep us stuck in traffic. Initiative 947 will delay and cancel voter-approved transit projects. Eyman does not care about keeping people and goods moving or ensuring that our economy is thriving. He is not credible and this initiative is his latest effort to subvert the will of the voters. We encourage all Washingtonians to decline to sign the initiative.
Transportation Choices Coalition has been fighting for over 24 years for more and better transportation options for people all around Washington State. We are deeply committed to defending voter-approved projects that will expand high-capacity transit in the Puget Sound.
