Want to help Sound Transit build the damn trains? A new bill was introduced in the legislature that would make a big difference!
Senate Bill 6148 would give Sound Transit the financial flexibility it needs by allowing it to issue 75-year bonds.
Why is this important? Because building light rail to Tacoma, Everett, West Seattle, Ballard, and a second downtown tunnel all at the same time is a huge expense. Sound Transit is a rich agency. The challenge is when, not whether Sound Transit has money available. SB 6148 would allow Sound Transit to match Federal bonds and pay for long-lasting infrastructure the same way the federal government pays for long-term public investments.
Having this flexibility will shape the cost-saving scenarios Sound Transit staff will present to the board this spring. This bill will give our region’s leaders more flexibility to avoid cutting projects, keep projects moving, and stick together as a region. That’s why it’s one of our top priorities this session.Â
SB 6148 has a hearing in the Senate Transportation Committee on Monday, January 19th, at 4 PM. Here are two quick ways you can help support this bill:Â
1. Email Committee Members
2. Sign in PRO for SB 6148
You can also sign up to testify or submit written testimony here. We need to show that this bill matters to people all across the Puget Sound region.
Our state doesn’t have time for its biggest region to be stuck in traffic. Puget Sound voters overwhelmingly voted for Sound Transit 3 in 2016. With over 717,000 “Yes” votes, it was the largest vote for transit in our region’s history. The sooner we build these projects, the sooner we get working families out of traffic and put more opportunities within reach.
