Everyone in Washington deserves to be able to get to transit safely. And our communities deserve streets they can be proud of. But right now, our roads are more dangerous than ever. In 2023, more Washingtonians lost their lives to traffic violence than in any year since 1990, and more people were killed walking or biking than in any year on record. The deadliest roads? State highways that run through cities and towns, where fatal crashes happen at twice the rate of other state-owned roads. These are roads like Aurora Ave, Division in Spokane, and Pacific Ave in Tacoma.
This ongoing traffic safety crisis is why Transportation Choices Coalition is pushing for a “Megaproject for Safety” — a bold initiative to fix Washington’s most dangerous roads. The good news is the Washington State Senate’s new transportation spending bill, SB 5160, includes $450 million over six years to make this happen. This funding will save lives and build better main streets for our communities.
We’re thrilled to see this funding in the Senate’s transportation budget. But the funding isn’t guaranteed, and we need to fight for it.
Washington’s leaders need to hear from you! Thank our state senators for prioritizing safety, and urge them to support this critical investment!
