The president released his full budget proposal earlier this week. This budget is an alarming statement against transit. The administration calls for the reduction of many funding programs, including the end of the TIGER grant program, and all funding for new transit construction. These cuts renege the previous administration’s long-term commitment of $1.2 billion for Lynnwood Link and impact many transportation projects around the state, including Spokane’s Central City line and Madison BRT.

The Puget Sound region, along with LA and Denver, were specifically called out in the budget as an example of communities that are passing local funding options. This is unfairly used as an excuse to zero out federal investment in local transit projects. It is a disingenuous position; for our state’s transportation projects to be successful, it is essential that the federal government be a strong partner. Our region has taken this partnership seriously and we call for the federal government to live up to its responsibilities.

We will continue to work with our federal delegation to defend important transit infrastructure investments that protect our environment, improve our communities’ health, and bring access to opportunity for all.
