Bus cuts are coming. But, there is something the City of Seattle can do about it.

The failure of King County Prop 1 means that devastating cuts are on the horizon. But there is some hope. Seattle voters approved the measure overwhelmingly. And, last month, Metro set up a program that allows cities to buy back bus service and prevent cuts.

It is critical that the City of Seattle take action to preserve as much Metro bus service as possible, and city leaders have stepped up to the challenge. Last month, Mayor Murray proposed a solution, and Councilmembers Licata and Sawant followed up with an intriguing amendment.

Today, Councilmember Rasmussen, acting as the chair of the Seattle Transportation Benefit District, officially introduced a resolution to put a transit funding measure on the ballot.

Here is the council’s timeline for discussion, debate, and possible adoption.

Tuesday, June 24, 10:30am (following City Transportation Committee meeting) – BRIEFING AND DISCUSSION
Thursday, June 26, 5:30pm – PUBLIC HEARING
Thursday, July 10, 2:00pm – DISCUSSION
Thursday, July 17, 2:00pm – DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE VOTE
Thursday, July 31, 2:00pm (if necessary) – DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE VOTE

We look forward to working with the council and the mayor to find the best possible proposal to put before voters.
