Our Feb. educational forum is on public health and transportation.  We will discuss what is happening locally, in the legislature, and around the country to incorporate health and transportation into planning and policy decisions. Please join us for this engaging educational discussion.

Moderator:

Victor Colman, Director of the Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition, a coalition of organizations working on improving our overall environment so our children live a healthy, active lifestyle.

Panelists:

Representative Andy Billig from the 3rd Legislative District in Spokane: Andy is a tireless advocate for active transportation in the Legislature.  He will take a break form the busy legislative session to discuss efforts to incorporate health into transportation planning and spending at the state level.

Julia Walton Urban Planner and founder of Inova Planning: Julia will discuss the national and regional movement building around addressing health in transportation and land use planning.  An experienced planner with a long resume of local and regional projects, Julia will also dive into some specifics of how planners, public health professionals, and public health advocates alike can put some of these great ideas into practice on the ground.

Kirsten Frandsen Prevention Program Coordinator at Tacoma-Pierce Health Department: Kirsten is in charge of the healthy communities of Pierce Counties effort at the health department.  The health department recently received a grant from the Center for Disease Control to reduce chronic disease and obesity in Pierce County.  A large portion of this grant will go towards promoting active transportation at the policy level in jurisdictions across Pierce County.  Kirsten will give us the details of the health departments exciting work in this ever emerging realm.

As always there will be able time for discussion and questions.

This is a public event. UWT Tacoma is located near numerous bus routes and Tacoma Link Light Rail.

This event is co-hosted by Downtown on the Go and Coalition for Active Transportation.
